Built in 1886, this historic William E. Hammett carriage house had a lovely existing patio and excellent spatial template, but the formless plantings failed to live up to the garden’s possibilities. We planted birch trees for vertical definition, while still allowing the epic azaleas to shine. Sweet woodruff and Boston ferns create an evergreen carpet and a frothy spring bloom. Allium, silene, and small moments of detail in plants like saxifrage add seasonal interest. Pinks, creams and mellow buttery yellows compliment the home’s crisp finish.
